Destination Santa Barbara: Our Top 2010 Picks

February 8, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

We sat down with Sharon Turner Brooks, director of communications for Santa Barbara's tourism, and were very eager to learn about everything that the American Riviera has to offer in 2010. Here is a rundown of a few of our favorites.

The traveling gourmet will never be at a loss in California, especially Santa Barbara. The city is embracing its culinary resources and have expanded on its already blossomed epicurean scene. The Urban Wine Trail, a popular wine-tasting walking tour (no need for designated drivers!), has expanded its route to include 11 wineries. This is a perfect option for travelers who want to experience California's world-class wines but don't have the time to drive up north. The wineries include The Alliance, Carr, Jaffurs, Kalyra, Kunin, Municipal Winemakers, Oreana, Santa Barbara Winery, Summerland, Westerly and Whitcraft.

October is also a great month for diners. Throughout the entire month the city hosts epicure.sb, a community-wide celebration of cuisine, beverages and culture. The festival features over 100 different events.

Read any good books lately? May 1 brings the 5th Annual Women's Literary Festival, which honors both readers and female writers with a day of presentations. Get your books ready to be signed by the following authors: Lynne Cox, Katherine V. Forrest, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, LeAnne Howe, Carol Lay, Graciela Limon and Lisa See.

Stop and smell a rose at the Rose Story Farm, a 15-acre property. Starting in April the farm is offering public tours throughout the six-month growing season. We hear that May is the optimal time for viewing when all 20,000 roses pop up. The farm is located in Carpinteria. Tours are offered Wendesdays and Saturdays and include a picnic lunch. Note: Reservations are required.
