Beijing Buzz: Sunrise Kempinski Hotel Opens Soon

Sunrise Kempinski Hotel, Beijing

There have been a number of notable hotel openings in China this year, with even more on the way. One such property is the Sunrise Kempinski, which will open in mid-November about 37 miles from the Beijing city center. The setting next to Yanqi Lake affords views of Yanshan Mountain and the Mutianyu Great Wall.

What is so striking about the hotel is its architecture: designed to look like a rising sun, it’s covered in more than 10,000 glass panels that are lit up at night by hydroelectric-powered LED lights. In a recent article, CNN declares, “Is this the most incredible hotel to open this year?” Architecturally, the hotel incorporates classic Chinese design elements (the rising sun is supposed to symbolize China’s fast-growing economy, according to CNN).

Soaring over 325 feet high, the Sunrise Kempinski is situated in a complex that encompasses almost 5.5 square miles and is hence the largest Kempinski in China. The luxury hotel itself—which has 306 guest rooms spread out over 21 floors—required two years of work with more than 9,300 construction workers. Other facilities include nine restaurants and bars, meeting rooms, a spa, recreational facilities, and a Kid’s Club.
