Peninsula Shanghai OpensMarch 21, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger
We heard that on March 18, the Peninsula Shanghai rolled out the red carpet for a smashing opening.
A gala event was hosted throughout the hotel by joint owners Sir Michael Kadoorie, Chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and David Wang, Chairman SPG Land Limited.
Among the entertainers were Chinese jazz performer, Coco Zhao and Shanghainese singer Jasmine Chen, who performed in the Compass Bar. But we heard the biggest hit was the 18-piece Peninsula Big Band, which played in the lobby led by Deren Zhang.
The Peninsula's collection of restaurants, the Lobby, Yi Long Court Chinese restaurant, Sir Elly's Restaurant, Bar and Terrace, The Compass Bar, The Rose Ballroom, The Spa and Salon de Ning, all offered local and international specialities along with caviar, champagne and cocktails.
For something a little different, the Palace Suite, a 12,000-square-foot space with terrance, was transformed into a "Fiesta Latina -a Taste of South America," featuring performances by Las Voces Del Mar, the official mariachi band of the Government of Mexico, and Afrocolombia, from Colombia.
