Two American Musicals to Debut in Madrid

Madrid will be seeing some notable theater openings this year, two of them at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of size and scope.

At the one end is the massive El Rey Leon, Disney Theatrical Productions' Spanish-language adaptation of its Broadway mega-hit The Lion King. We hear the Madrid version will be the largest stage musical ever presented in Spain when it opens in October at the Lope de Vega Theatre on the Gran Via. Like the movie on which it is based, the musical will have songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. Visit www.lionking.com for more information.

For a smaller and more intimate evening, [Nombre del Show], the Spanish adaptation of the little-musical-that-could [title of show], is also scheduled to open in Madrid this year. The small-scale, high-brow show began in a tiny off-off-Broadway space in New York, moved to a larger off-Broadway theater and finally came to Broadway after several years. Since its Broadway bow, it has been produced at regional theaters around the country, and will finally be making its Spanish debut. No date has been set for the Madrid opening--check back here for more information.
