Things to do in Florence

There's always something happening in Florence. Here are just a few upcoming events worth catching throughout the city, courtesy of the concierge team at the Four Seasons Florence.

Exhibitions: From September 13 to October 14, the National Alinari Museum of Photography houses the exhibition Akyiyoshi Ito – Sogni sott’acqua. The Japanese painter and sculptor comes to Florence for the first time to show his “miracles beneath the waves.” Opening on September 22 at Palazzo Strozzi is the exhibition The Thirties: The arts in Italy beyond Fascism, offering a narrative of Italy during the Fascist period. The exhibit runs until January 27.

From October 5, at the Strozzina Center of Contemporary Culture, is Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art, featuring paintings by Francis Bacon compared with works by five contemporary artists (Nathalie Djurberg, Adrian Ghenie, Arcangelo Sassolino, Chiharu Shiota, Annegret Soltau). The exhibit runs through January 27.

Showing until November 4 is the exhibition Arte torna Arte, held at the Accademia Gallery and including works by Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alberto Burri, Antonio Catelani, Martin Creed, Sol LeWitt, Pablo Picasso, Alfredo Pirri, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Renato Ranaldi, Alberto Savinio, Thomas Struth, Fiona Tan, Bill Viola, Andy Warhol and others. Palazzo’s Pitti Costume Gallery will present The New Frontier: History and culture of Native Americans from the Gilcrease Museum Collections, featuring major vestiges of the Native American civilization. The exhibit runs until December 9, .

Music: On Sunday September 23, British rock band Radiohead will perform at Florence’s Cascine Park. Paolo Conte, one of the best-known Italian singers and songwriters, will perform on November 16 at the Verdi Theatre.

Theatre: The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino's season opens with a ballet performance by MaggioDanza. Choreographers Jirí Kylián, Angelin Preljocaj, and Andonis Foniadakis present Sechs Tanze, from September 27 to 30. La Pergola Theatre will present Orlando Furioso, starring Stefano Accorsi, from November 20 to 25.
