Gourmet Tokyo: New Michelin Stars for World’s Top Food City

The Peninsula Tokyo

This week saw the release of the 2014 Michelin Guide to Tokyo. Eager gourmands pored over the new listings, which included 14 three-star restaurants (down from last year's 15), and Tokyo’s first list of Bib Gourmands. Among the new winners, explains Reuters, are “a basement sushi restaurant whose octogenarian chef features in a documentary and an eatery serving potentially poisonous blowfish.”

Paris currently has 10 three-star restaurants, meaning Tokyo still reigns supreme as the world’s gourmet food capital. The region also has the most starred restaurants, including 59 two-star establishments, and 208 one-star restaurants. Notably, three Tokyo restaurants-- Dominique Bouchet, Goryukubo and Yunke-- made their debut in Michelin’s guide with two-star ratings. Not a small feat!

The 10 top restaurants in Tokyo and Shonan are Azabu Yukimura, Esaki, Ginza Koju, Ishikawa, Joel Robuchon, Kanda, Koan (in Shonan), Quintessance, Ryugin, and Sukiyabashi Jiro Honten. Tourism to Tokyo is on the rise, with many tourists praising the food as a main attraction, and will only continue to increase prior to the 2020 Summer Olympics, when the city will be host to the Games.
