Nine-Hole Golf Course Ready for Play at St. Regis Princeville
March 29, 2010 By: Jena Tesse FoxHappy news for Hawaii-bound golf aficionados: The Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort will reopen its nine-hole Woods Course for play on April 1.
The Woods Course closed in the fall of 2008 as part of the renovation of the 27-hole Makai Golf Club. The original design of the Makai consisted of three nine-hole courses, and Makai Golf Club now features two distinctly individual courses: the 18-hole Makai Course, which reopened in January, and the nine-hole Woods Course, reopening April 1.
Purists will be pleased: Unlike the Makai Course, which was completely renovated and its yardage extended to include four tees, no major changes were made to the layout of the Woods Course. Instead, the original course design has been redefined, particularly in the area of the bunkers, which have been restored to their original shape. The 3,445-yard Woods Course winds through native woodlands set against a backdrop of magnificent mountain views and is ideal for the casual golfer who wants to enjoy a leisurely nine-hole round in a relaxed layout. New golf carts are in use for both the Makai and Woods courses and will be equipped with GPS by the end of April. However, golfers on the Woods are also offered the option of walking the course for a more classic and traditional golf experience.
For all the luxury and opulence at The St. Regis Princeville, access to the golf course is surprisingly affordable. The standard rate to play the Woods Course is $60 per player, and junior golfers under 17 years old can receive 50 percent off the standard rate when accompanied by an adult player. For kamaaina (Hawaii residents with valid i.d.), the rate is $25 with shared cart or $15 to walk the course. Junior kamaaina players are free when accompanied by an adult player.
