No. 1: Survey Says Moscow is Most Expensive City for Hotels
August 9, 2010 By: David Eisen
We love Moscow as much as the next guy (we even devoted an entire story on the Russian capital back in April), but you better have a nice cash roll to visit, according to travel agency Hogg Robinson Group Plc. A survey by the company says Moscow is the most expensive city in the world in regard to average hotel room rates. Average rate: $407!
Following Moscow, which retains its place as the city with the highest average room rate for the sixth year, were Geneva ($315) and Hong Kong ($314). The good news for travel agents is that room rates in Europe look to be on the up-and-up. The survey indicated that cities such as Amsterdam, Stockholm (whose avergae room rate jumped 13 percent) and Zurich (5 percent leap) showed increases in average room rates, according to the report.
The story was a little different in the Middle East. Abu Dhabi's room rates fell 25 percent (low occupancy and new hotel developments were blamed for the drop). Dubai dropped 12 percent, too.
Domestically, U.S. room rates were deemed static or flat, though San Francisco, known for normally higher rates compared to the rest of the U.S., fell by 11 percent.
