The Buzz: Fairmont Opening Seven New Hotels
January 12, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger
It's safe to say that the travel industry's collective New Year Resolution was for a better 2010. And it seems Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is sticking to it with their expected opening of seven hotels worldwide.
First, The Savoy, a London icon, will reopen after a nearly two-year, $160 million restoration. The face- and body-lift includes work on the 268 rooms and suites, the courtyard, American Bar, public areas, a new Royal Suite, and a remodel of the River Restaurant. Culinary superstar Gordon Ramsay's company, Gordon Ramsay Holdings, will operate the Savoy Grill. The renovation includes the addition of The Beaufort Bar for champagne and cocktails, and the Savoy Tea Shop.
Shanghai's landmark Fairmont Peace Hotel is also undergoing renovations. The 269-room hotel will reopen its famed Jazz Bar. The hotel will also host the Peace Hall on the 9th floor, which was home to many Shanghai cabarets and parties.
Saudi Arabia is gearing up for the opening of the Makkah Clock Royal Tower, which will be part of the Abraj Al Bait Complex. The 858-room hotel will be one of the world's tallest, standing at 1,893 feet. It will also host a 130-foot clock, which will announce Islam's daily prayers.
The Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver is mixing business with pleasure. The expected 377-room hotel will include 175 residential condos. Its location is adjacent to the Vancouver Conference Center. Guests can take advantage of the Willow Stream Spa and Fitness Center.
Expected in early 2010, the Fairmont Pittsburgh will offer 185 rooms and views of PNC Park and the Pittsburgh skyline. The hotel is centrally located near theater, entertainment and financial hubs, as well as sports facilities.
The Fairmont Beijing is currently in its soft-opening phase. The 222-room hotel is located near shopping and business districts, as well as top cultural attractions like The Forbidden City. Relax after a day of touring at the Willow Stream Spa.
And finally we anticipate the opening of Fairmont Zimbali Resort, located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The 154 rooms offer views of the Indian Ocean and large terraces.
