A Regal Journey Through the Bavarian Countryside
July 13, 2009 By: Alexia Dellner
For clients wishing to travel like royalty, all aboard the Palazzo Dinner Train traveling through the clear lakes and rivers, rolling hills, and evergreen forests of Bavaria.
From April to October, the luxury Dinner Train departs every second Friday from Munich’s central station to Fuessen, the site of King Ludwig’s famous castles.
Neuschwanstein Castle
Once passengers arrive at the castles, the royal treatment continues as horse-drawn carriages carry them to Hohenschwangau Castle, the royal family’s summer residence. From there participants can enjoy the same breathtaking views once enjoyed by the King himself while Neuschwanstein Castle was under construction.
Hohenschwangau was home to one of Bavaria’s most famous monarchs, King Ludwig II, and his mother Marie of Prussia. An avid lover of the arts and architecture, a walk through the residence reveals King Ludwig’s passion for romanticism. The Neuschwanstein Castle, completed after King Ludwig’s death, is one of the most spectacular sites in region, perhaps most famous for being the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland.
Following an exclusive, after-hours tour inside the castle and tour refreshments in the Royal Beer Garden, passengers re-board the train for the evening’s highlight – a gourmet dinner prepared by Harold Wohlfahrt, one of Germany’s top chefs. Dinner is accompanied by atmospheric waltzes and music by Richard Wagner, who was a frequent visitor to Hohenschwangau.
The four-course meal features gastronomic delights such as warm smoked brook trout with Avruga caviar cream and a tournedo of beef with truffled herb crust, rosemary polenta and root vegetables. Harking back to the era of old Hollywood, the Dinner Train to Hohenschwangau is for those who wish to actually savor the experience of traveling, rather than simply enduring the stress of getting there.
