Regal Ride: Experience Southeast Asia by Luxury Rail

July 14, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

If you want classic and romantic travel, we highly recommend doing so by luxury rail, especially if where you're headed is an exotic destination. This November, check out Orient-Express' new Chronicles of Southeast Asia itineraries, four new journeys that take travelers deep into the region.

The routes take passengers to places off the beaten path, while still providing them with the highest level of luxury. We like that the experience is capped at 60 guests per trip and only presidential and state carriages will be in use.

The Epic Thailand journey is six nights, visiting Bangkok, Isan, Chiang Mai, Lampang and back to Bangkok. It includes a walking tour through a traditional village in Isan; a sunset candlelight reception at Prasat Sikoraphum; lunch with Thai oenologist at Khao Yai Gran Monte Vineyard; the opportunity to participate in a Bai Sii ceremony; and a tour of the town of Lampang in a traditional pony trap.

The Fables of the Hills tour is six nights, hitting Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, Penang, Surat Thani, River Kwai and Bangkok. It includes a Kuala Lumpur city tour; Strawberry and tea tasting in the Cameron Highlands; and a visit to the Surat Thani Monkey Training College.

Legends of the Peninsula takes you through Bangkok, River Kwai, Trang, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore on a six-night journey. The journey includes The River Kwai Bridge; a sojourn at Trang that offers water sports; Dugong trekking; and Thai cooking classes.

Finally, Tales of Laos, a three-night experience, travels from Bangkok to Pimai to Khao Yai to Vientiane and back to Bangkok. Highlights include stopping at Phimai to explore the Angkor-style Khmer temples and exploring the vineyards of Khao Yai hills.
