Spanish Bar Basque Opens at Eventi Hotel in Manhattan

January 6, 2011 By: Katie Tandy

Bar Basque has opened at Eventi, a Kimpton Hotel in Manhattan's west side, serving up a selection of pintxos—small tapas ubiquitous within the Basque region of Spain.

Helming the kitchen at Bar Basque is Executive Chef de Cuisine Yuhi Fujinaga who is whipping up dishes like a Yellowfin Tuna Tartare with tomato veil, jamon toast and red wine caviar. Be sure to check out the rotating culinary kaleidescope of chefs from the Basque region that they host every other month.

Cocktail-connoisseurs will be pleased to discover the new restaurant also boasts a long wine list, emphasizing Spain, as well as a “Gin & Tonic List” featuring six varieties of specialty gins, and four specialty drinks in honor of four renown Spanish chefs—Ferran Adria, Joan Roca, Adoni Luis Aduriz and Juan Mari Arzak.

As for the design, we've heard that artist, illustrator and conceptual designer, Syd Mead—known for his visionary work on science fiction films like “Blade Runner,” “Aliens” and “TRON”—is responsible for the sleek and sexy aesthetic, featuring a palette of of red and black mingling with glinting metallic accents.

Guests will also find glowing glass panels behind the bar that evolve from branches to leafy silhouettes in a clever echo of the street level ‘park’ below.

The indoor lounge accommodates 36 with a private dining room that seats up to 20 and provides a view of the open kitchen.

Nice Touch: Guests can enjoy year-round “al fresco” dining as the outdoor terrace, which overlooks the park below, features both retractable windows and roof.
