Hotel Matilda, San Miguel

What’s heating up Mexico? San Miguel, a small village about three hours outside of Mexico City. Last month, we brought you the skinny on the new Rosewood property in the colonial village, and now, we’ve got the dish on yet another must for your VIP clients: Hotel Matilda.

While the hotel debuted in September last year, there are some exciting new developments that will make this a top sell among your discerning elite. Hotel Matilda has recently unveiled a brand-new spa concept, called Spa en Vivo, or a “living spa.” Translation: Guests will be offered a unique set of experiences in a natural setting with thermal waters. The spa, which will debut on July 1, is set on a hilltop that has mineral thermal springs, gardens and views of the countryside. It will provide therapeutic soaking, massages, treatments, fitness classes and time for relaxation, all outdoors. A temazcal sweat lodge will also be available for detoxification.

Beginning in September, Spa en Vivo will host Sunday Sunset Parties. At 4 p.m. the spa will close down and welcome the swank, sultry crowd. For a fixed price, guests and locals alike can come dance, swim and party into the wee hours. If your clients are looking to tie the knot, Spa en Vivo can be rented out for parties of up to 150 people.

Hotel Matilda is pure boutique-chic, with 32 rooms in five categories, a restaurant, bar, library and spa (the existing on-site spa, which will soon be joined by Spa en Vivo). Nice Touch: The hotel was named after the owner’s 86-year-old mother, Matilda.

We hear the top pick at this property are the two Owner’s Suites. These state-of-the-art accommodations come with in-room bars, a pergola-covered terrace, deep soaking tubs, and views of the gardens, pool, city and mountains.

The restaurant serves up organic food, much of which is grown on property. We hear that the restaurant even has its own goats—the reason behind its fresh cheese. The on-site spa has four cabins, a Hammam and a Zen garden.

What makes a hotel truly luxe is the level of service, and Hotel Matilda has gone above and beyond to make sure its staff does, too. Known as Ambassadors, all staff members have gone through rigorous training to be able to converse comfortably with guests about everything from the city to the hotel’s artwork to food and more.
