First Look: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam Opens by City's Main Canal

It's here: The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam opened late last week in the UNESCO area of Herengracht. The canalside property is made up of six historic 17th- and 18th-century town houses that were once home to some of the city's top citizens. The homes have been recreated into a 93-room hotel.

"With Europe's fourth largest airport and nearly six million international visitors a year, Amsterdam is a thriving tourist destination," Simon Vincent, area president, Hilton Worldwide, said, in a statement.

Nice touch: The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam looks out over the city's grandest canal, the Herengracht, which was built during the Golden Age. Each of the rooms and suites looks out over Amsterdam—some with views of the canal and some with views of the gardens and rooftops. Each bedroom retains historical elements of the original buildings with beamed ceilings, sash windows and large bathrooms with freestanding baths.

Foodies will get to try meals created by Jonnie and Thérèse Boer at Librije's Zusje Amsterdam.  Owners of three-Michelin star restaurant De Librije in the Netherlands, the pair have created a menu with Sidney Schutte, former chef at De Librije and now the executive chef at the new hotel. There's also the Maurer Room, a good pick for private dining and small-group meetings (with some swank Rococo interiors), or the Peacock Alley lounge for a drink or light lunch.

Elsewhere, the Vault Bar is an exclusive den in one of the houses - formerly the original vault of a bank. Meeting and banqueting facilities include the Hooft Ballroom, with views overlooking the canal and space for 160 people.

On the garden level of the new property, the Guerlain Spa has three treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room, heated indoor pool and views across the private garden.

Bonus perk: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam's Personal Concierges will help guests before, during and after their stay.
