First Look: Moscow's Hotel Nikol'skaya Kempinski

Last week, we posted that the Hotel Nikol'skaya Kempinski had celebrated its Grand Opening on Lubyanka Square in central Moscow. A six-year renovation project merged several adjacent historic buildings not far from Red Square, the Kremlin, and the Bolshoi Theatre. Now, we have a closer look at this impressive hotel, and we're even more excited about it.

Reception

Built in the 1870s, the building was, until the early years of the 20th century, the residence of Count Orlov-Davydov. (After the early years of the 20th century, of course, it wasn't such a good thing to be a count in Russia.) And while the hotel is undeniably contemporary, there are many old-world elements to appeal to one's sense of history and heritage.

When they walk in the front doors, guests see palatial chandeliers described as "palatial" and a multi-coloured stained glass dome over art-deco furniture. And while many of the guestrooms have kept their historic elements (think high ceilings), they all have modern tech elements like complimentary Wi-Fi and a smart control pad for all the room's features. (Tip: Those seeking a quieter experience will want to ask for rooms facing the interior courtyard patio.)

VIPs will want to book one of the top suites: The Orlov Suite looks out over Lubyanka Square and evokes the Belle Époque. The two Presidential Suites have panoramic views over the Square and the Historical Museum.

And then there are the dining options: At MosaiK, Executive Chef Marco Alban uses an open kitchen to prepare seafood and grilled items as well as dishes from traditional Russian cuisine. The Italian Bistro A Tavola has a seasonal menu inspired by a range of Italian regions; the Orlov Lobby Lounge and Bar has chocolate fountains, cakes, Blue Peak tea and Masala Chai; and the Latin Mojito Lounge (set to open in early December) is a rooftop terrace with a panoramic 180-degree view of downtown Moscow. (The bar’s outdoor summer terrace and indoor lounge make it a good pick for year-round imbibing.) Right around the same time that the Mojito Lounge opens its doors, the Parisien Café Vendome will also debut, serving home-made cakes, mousses, tarts and eclairs. Café Vendome will also sell selected cheeses, as well as home-made baguettes and other breads for customized sandwiches. And for cigar aficionados (we don't judge), the Robusto Cigar Club will serve after-dinner spirits and top-notch cigars all accompanied by a sophisticated jazz soundtrack.

A good pick for small meetings, the hotel’s conference facilities accommodate up to 180 people. Highlights include Kandinsky grand ballroom, designed for receptions, cocktail events and celebrations, as well as Malevich boardroom, which overlooks Lubyanka Square.

Finally, the Spa at the Nikol’skaya is operated by L.RAPHAEL, marking the Russian debut of the Swiss brand. It will have a large swimming pool and fitness center.
