Ship-Shape Champagne: 200-Year-Old Bottles Uncovered in Baltic Sea

September 2, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

Sure, high-quality Champagne gets better with age, but what if it is aged 200 years?

We hear from Luxist that divers are recovering bottles (70, to be exact) of Champagne that have been on the bottom of the Baltic Sea since around 1800. The first bottle was brought up in mid-July and the cargo is suspected to be from the now-out-of-business House of Juglar.

Luxist reports that some bottles have cracks and a few corks have corroded, which means that salt water could have leaked inside. It is believed that the bottles were en route to St. Petersburg, Russia from Copenhagen, Denmark.
