St. Petersburg's Belmond Grand Hotel Europe Unveils New Top Suites

Here's something cool in Russia: We hear the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe has unveiled six new suites—including the largest presidential suite in St Petersburg and five Avant-Garde Suites inspired by 20th-century Russian artists. The suites were created from 19 first-floor rooms and will have 24-hour butler service.

Complementing the historic hotel’s neo-baroque décor and stained-glass windows, the contemporary new suites were created by Tihany Design (which also worked on the Oro restaurant at sister property Belmond Hotel Cipriani in Venice).

The Presidential Suite

Covering more than 3,770 square feet, the Presidential Suite is accessed through a grand lobby with dramatic domed gold-leaf ceiling and looks out over the Nevsky Prospekt and Mikhailovskaya Ulitsa. The suite has two bedrooms with king-size beds, two marble bathrooms and a hammam sauna. It also has a private fitness center with a treadmill and cycling machine, a game room and a combined study and library with secret bookcase door leading to the bedroom.

The Presidential Suite

Guests in the Presidential Suite can get privately cooked meals (made in the dedicated kitchen) in the dining room, which seats up to eight people and is a good pick for an exclusive dinner party. The living room has its own bar while the music room has an antique Carl Schroeder grand piano.

The Avant-Garde

The five Avant-Garde Suites are named after famous artists from the era. Each space is individually designed to reflect its namesake artist and features specially commissioned artwork that is reminiscent of their work.

Archipenko Suite

The Malevich Suite has geometric shapes and bold colors; the Archipenko Suite has gentle lines and warm tones; the Kandinsky Suite is inspired by its namesake’s abstract art; the Rodchenko Suite plays on geometric shapes, light and shadow; and the Lissitzky Suite features graphic lines and clean colors. Rich wool carpets feature geometric patterns that hint at the artists’ styles.

Kandinsky Suite

Each Avant-Garde Suite has a separate bedroom with a king-size bed, a living room with dining table for four to 10 people and a marble bathroom with separate bath and shower. The rooms also have a boudoir with dressing table. There is also a widescreen television and atmospheric dimmer lighting.

The creation of the Presidential and Avant-Garde Suites is the latest phase in a refurbishment plan at Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, which also saw the restoration of the hotel’s neo-baroque façade in 2013. The completed refurbishment will include a new pan-Asian culinary concept, AZIA, from world-class restaurant designer Super Potato. The new suites complement the hotel’s 10 Historic Suites, which were reopened in 2010 following a meticulous restoration, each with a historic theme such as Pavarotti, Stravinsky, Faberge and Romanov.
