June 3, 2010 By: Mary Winston Nicklin

This week witnessed the unveiling of the Louis Vuitton traveling case which will transport the FIFA World Cup trophy, one of the most coveted prizes in sports. Naomi Campbell was on hand at the ceremony in Paris to show the goods. Though historically the trophy has been carried in an armored metal case, FIFA decided this year to commission the prestigious luxury fashion house to create something special. As quoted on the Huffington Post, Louis Vuitton spokesman Antoine Arnault said, "There was no reason why security couldn't be synonymous with elegance."
The trophy case was custom-made in the Louis Vuitton workshop in Asnières outside Paris; it took over 100 hours to complete the leather-bound, 18-ct-gold case, fitted with the signature Vuitton brass lock. Vogue UK describes the company’s long history of designing lavish luggage cases, covered in Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram: “Vuitton [also] crafted the trunk that holds the world's oldest sporting trophy - the famous silver ewer of the 1851 America's Cup.”
