Off-the-Radar in the South Pacific in New Caledonia

Sheraton New Caledonia Resort

New Caledonia is one of those mythical destinations that conjures images of white sandy beaches and the turquoise waters of the south Pacific. In fact, this archipelago is much closer to Australia than Tahiti, another French overseas territory. For travelers looking for off-the-radar destinations, New Caledonia should top the list for its pristine landscapes, Melanesian culture, and French influence.

News from Nouvelle-Calédonie: the archipelago has opened its first five-star resort be built outside of Nouméa (the capital) in 15 years. Located in the Deva region next to a lagoon recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, the new Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Resort and Spa took nine years to build. As reported by Stuff.co.nz, “a new national tourism strategy is targeting affluent travelers, particularly those from Australia and New Zealand, as a diversification to its dominant mining sector.”

The 180 rooms and suites are housed in traditional thatched bungalows. There are a plethora of water sports (including kite surfing) plus golf. For those looking to unwind, there’s a sprawling outdoor pool and a spa. The Kid’s Club entertains the children while their parents get some R&R.
