All Aboard: High-Speed Rail Now Links Amsterdam and Rotterdam

September 10, 2009 By: Mary Winston Nicklin

This week saw the launch of high-speed train service between Amsterdam and Rotterdam with trains zipping over bridges and through tunnels-- including eight kilometers burrowed beneath the "Green Heart" agricultural region-- at speeds of 160 kilometers per hour. A high-speed line between Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris has been in the works for some 30 years, and is now expected to start in December or January 2010 when special trains are delivered that can reach speeds of 300 km/hour. Anticipated travel time between the city center of Amsterdam and Paris Gare du Nord? Just 3 little hours.
