Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya to Open at Year’s End

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has announced that Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya will open this December. Situated on 590 acres of Caribbean beachfront, just north of Playa del Carmen, the resort reflects Mayan culture and will have 214 guest rooms (41 suites), three outdoor pools, a 10,000 square-foot Nuam spa, four restaurants and bars, and lagoon and ocean access.

The design of the hotel is intended to bring out the natural beauty of the setting, including the beach, the sky, and even the birds. At the hotel’s entrance, a water feature and oculus reflect the region’s cenotes (underground reservoirs of water) and are meant to frame the stars and the sky, reminding guests of the importance of astrology in Mayan culture.

The 28 buildings encompassing the hotel’s guest rooms also draw inspiration from nature: the geometry of the rooves, the color palette (muted tones to bring out the color of the surroundings), and materials (wooden notes) are meant to highlight the 200 species of birds in the region.

Indoors, vibrant and colorful interiors reflect the blues of the ocean, deep greens of the jungle, and varying colors of the toucan bird.

Andaz Mayakoba’s open layout guest rooms and suites will overlook the lagoons, mangrove and resort gardens, the golf course, or the Caribbean coastline. Each will have a balcony or terrace, while the 41 luxury suites will also have private plunge pools. The design of the rooms will be grounded by an “area rug” crafted from Mexican cement tiles as well as a signature Mayan décor item such as a traditional mask, a Mayan huipil, or a colorful bird figure.

Andaz Mayakoba will offer four unique restaurant concepts: Casa Amate is a residential-style Latin American concept, utilizing private rooms with terraces; Cocina Milagro will be the resort’s poolside open kitchen restaurant that will have a market-to-table concept and an emphasis on seafood; OllaTaco is another poolside restaurant which will have Yucatan specialties and locally crafted beers; and OllaCeviche will be a casual beachfront and poolside dining option offering fresh ceviches, sharing plates, and a tequila bar.

The Naum Spa will have six treatment rooms and a complete menu of services, some of which will use indigenous Mayan methods. Many of the products that will be used have been created with all-natural, locally sourced ingredients. The 10,000-square-foot facility will also include a 24-hour state-of-the-art-gym.

An outdoor pool and lap pool will be centralized in the lagoon-side section of the resort, while the third option, expansive beachside pool will be on the other side of the property.Five meeting and event spaces, including a 6,000-square-foot ballroom will be available to guests for both business and social events. The 14,000 square feet of meeting space will also include state-of-the-art integrated audiovisual systems, a fully equipped open kitchen, innovative breakout spaces, and outdoor and lawn areas.

Andaz Mayakoba has teamed up with a series of Cultural Insiders including Senkoe, a Riviera Maya graffiti artist, who will curate the vibrant murals throughout the resort, and Sol Tamargo, a local photographer, will offer photo and video shoots to Andaz Mayakoba guests. The resort will also offer a series of events, allowing guests to learn about millennial Mayan culture, such as learning to speak the language or preparing the best tacos in a Tacology class.

Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya marks the first Mexican resort for the lifestyle Andaz brand. The property will join the Andaz resort collection which currently consists of Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort in Costa Rica, Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, and Andaz Scottsdale debuting November 2016.
