Windstar Cruises has appointed John Gunner to the newly created position of vice president of expansion projects and named Michael B. Ross as its new director of marine and safety operations.

Gunner, who now has decades of experience in the cruise industry, started off as an electrical engineer. He entered the cruise business as a sea-going officer aboard P&O Princess Cruises, culminating as Chief Electro Technical Officer. He then returned ashore to be senior project manager for P&O Princess Cruises’ New Build Group, where he spent 12 years designing and reviewing development of passenger vessels. After a promotion to senior vice president of technical operations, he oversaw all technical and engineering operations for more than a decade. Since 2016, Gunner has worked with Windstar Cruises as a technical consultant.

Windstar’s new director of marine and safety operations also comes into his new position with decades of experience. Before taking jobs with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line, Ross worked on government ships and with Maersk Line Ltd. And Koch Shipping, Inc. He holds an Unlimited Masters License and specializes in environmental compliance, safety awareness and emergency preparedness. Most recently, Ross served as director of management systems with Royal Caribbean. In his new position with Windstar, Ross will develop and implement policies to ensure the company’s fleet operates safely and with minimum environmental impact.
