October may be shoulder season in Nantucket but it also is one of the best times to visit the New England island. Think fewer seasonal visitors, leaves in bright orange and red, clam chowder by the fireplace and bike rides to a brewery.

For a modern stay on an island with more than 700 pre-Civil War homes, we suggest staying at the White Elephant Hotel. This hotel has waterfront views and well-appointed guestrooms that are just a short walk from the main town. Guests should book a Harbor View Suite, like Room No. 250, which sleeps up to two adults and two children and has a pullout sofa. Ideal for families, this room has a tub, a cozy fireplace and a private balcony. Insider Tip: During our stay we took advantage of the complimentary port and cheese served every afternoon in the petite library. Here, travelers can also unwind with a quick read before heading out for a bike ride to the local Cisco Brewers. The hotel will provide the bicycles, all guests have to do is pedal and take in the scenery, including those quaint Nantucket homes. At Cisco, we suggest sipping a seasonal brew or a classic like the “Whale’s Tale” pale ale, a probable play on Nantucket’s famed whaling history. Keep in mind, the atmosphere here is low-key, complete with yard games and good company.

Travelers seeking to connect with Nantucket’s historical past and a central location should stay at the Jared Coffin House, originally built in 1845. We suggest Room No. 301, which has views of popular Center Street. For couples looking for a romantic escape, Luxury Travel Advisor recommends The Wauwinet. This homey hotel is located on the northeast point of Nantucket, making evening sunset walks along the beach a must. Book one of the cottages across from the main hotel for ultimate privacy and space. Booking Tip: The White Elephant Hotel is open until October 31. It is, however, open on weekends in November and the first full week of December, before it closes for the season. The Jared Coffin House is open year-round and The Wauwinet closes on October 30. For VIP bookings at all three properties, contact Christina Hall ([email protected]) at Nantucket Island Resorts.
