Cate Blanchett Out at Sydney Theatre Company

Sad news for theater fans in Sydney: Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton are stepping down as co-artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company, according to the Sydney Morning Herald and other sources.

The appointment of the high-profile couple had been described by some as a "Hollywood fix" that attracted international directors and actors like Liv Ullmann, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Steven Soderbergh and William Hurt to the theater.

Following several years of losses, the couple's 2009 debut program turned an operating profit of $607,167, thanks largely to a sell-out production of A Streetcar Named Desire. The 2010 season turned a profit of $919,860.
