In big art news for Spain, an outpost of the world-famous Centre Pompidou will open in Malaga on March 28. The Parisian modern art museum already opened a satellite in Metz in eastern France in 2010. The new Spanish venue—located in the native city of the great painter Pablo Picasso—will be a temporary “pop-up” museum for a five-year duration.
The Centre Pompidou Malaga will be housed in a contemporary glass cube dubbed El Cubo, perched on the quay of the port in the Andalusian city. Exhibitions will showcase loaned works from the original Paris museum, by artists like Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Rineke Dijkstra, Tony Oursler, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Chirico, Alberto Giacometti and Sophie Calle.
Currently welcoming four million tourists a year, the city of Malaga already has a trio of fine art museums: the Museo Picasso, the Museo Carmen Thyssen and the ‘Centro de Arte Contemporáneo. This new attraction is expected to be an additional tourism draw. The Pop-up Pompidou concept will be a great experiment for the Centre Pompidou, with an expected expansion of the program in the future.
