The Main Pool. The hotel can also arrange water activities such as scuba diving.

We wanted to get the skinny on Capella Ixtapa, which opened in Mexico in December 2008, and so we checked in with Vanessa Sawtell-Jones of Coastline Travel Advisors, who knows the property well; she also loves its location.

“Ixtapa is an emerging destination for Mexico, and this hideaway is the perfect place for couples looking to have a private, relaxing holiday,” says Sawtell-Jones, who appeared with her colleagues on the cover of Luxury Travel Advisor in 2008. She finds it to be ideal for clients who have been to Mexico but now want something new. Sawtell-Jones also likes that each guest booked at the resort receives the services of a 24/7 personal assistant. Personal service, in fact, is the name of the game at this property, which has just 59 guest rooms and suites situated on cliffs leading down to the beach. Each guest room has a private outdoor terrace and a plunge pool, which is well hidden from other suites (skinny dipping anyone?). Top digs are the two one-bedroom Penthouse Suites.

Foodies won’t feel shortchanged at this resort, which has four dining options ranging from casual to elegant. Nice Touch: Private dinners can be arranged at unique locations on the resort grounds. Indulgence continues during the day, when clients can charter a private yacht, or burn off last night’s calories with kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling or a host of other adventure activities.

Ready to unwind mid-afternoon? Sawtell-Jones suggests an outdoor massage overlooking the Pacific at the spa (she also advises to reserve ahead of time). There are six indoor treatment rooms and each spa visit starts off with a traditional foot cleanse.
