Destination Weddings at Del Mar
Destination Weddings at Del Mar can be done up in a variety of styles suited to the bride and groom.

Mexico’s major resorts certainly know how to do destination weddings justice. But if your A-listers are looking to tie the knot in Mexico on a more intimate (though equally refined) level, we have two spots that are worth a look.

Del Mar Development in Palmilla, Los Cabos is a collection of beachfront and ocean-view residences and homes overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Of the 200 homes in the collection, 40 are available for private rental, allowing visitors to stay in Mexico like a resident, while giving them access to resort-like amenities.

Guests who want to plan a destination wedding at the community have access to Club Ninety Six, the private beach club that is for the exclusive use of residents and guests. Club Ninety Six can accommodate anywhere from two to 200 guests, and offers the option for couples to go for a barefoot luxury wedding on the beach or under a canopy of palm trees on the lawn. There is a beachside fire pit for informal cocktail gatherings, as well as an upper dining terrace and lounge for more formal celebrations.

Most Casonas at Imanta
Most Casonas at Imanta have plunge pools, while some have rooftop Jacuzzis or sundecks.

We hear that Club Ninety Six has a well-trained staff that is used to handling the most elaborate requests for weddings. Think live music on a floating stage, fireworks displays, cigar rolling and fire dancing.

Before and after the celebrations, guests who rent the villas at Del Mar have access to a slew of high-end amenities. The company’s onsite concierge, including private butler and personal chef service, is on hand to cater to guests. The development is home to Club Espiritu, a 10,000-square-foot hillside retreat with views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Club Espiritu has top-of-the-line fitness equipment, a spinning studio, Pilates studio, yoga pavilion, massage, steam, sauna and lap pool.

Golf enthusiasts will love the two golf clubs near the development, which, we say, are perfect for the guys (or gals!) pre- or post-wedding. The Palmilla Golf Club has views of the Sea of Cortez from nearly every tee. The 27-hole Signature Jack Nicklaus Championship Course features the Arroyo Nine, Mountain Nine and Ocean Nine. There is also the Querencia Golf Club, an exclusive golf club neighboring the development and featuring an 18-hole Tom Fazio Championship Course.

Del Mar wedding celebrations
Del Mar has been known to bring in Mariachi bands for wedding celebrations.

Nice Touch: Within the Palmilla community is One&Only Palmilla (www.oneandonlyresorts.com). Guests of Del Mar have access to this luxury enclave, should they choose to take advantage of the spa services or the restaurants. This is perfect for wedding guests, as well. If the bride and groom choose to stay at Del Mar, they can book rooms at One&Only for their guests.

Head over to Punta de Mita to visit the boutique and intimate Imanta Resort. With just six stone casas and two casonas, this is the perfect spot for a private ceremony or a complete resort buy-out, both of which are options.

The resort sits on 250 acres of tropical landscape with two miles of coastline. The casas and casonas stagger down the hillside within their own jungle overlooking a stretch of beach. Most have plunge pools, while some have rooftop Jacuzzis or sundecks.

Betrothed couples will love the options available at Imanta. The resort is ideal for exclusive events and the staff is on hand to arrange everything from the rehearsal dinner to ceremony and reception to a post-wedding brunch. If your party wants to experience Imanta exclusively, we suggest booking the Private Escape package, which essentially is a buy-out of the resort and is available for up to 25 guests per night.

Want a little more romance? Book Imanta’s private massage suite. Couples can also choose to have a treatment in any of the resort’s beach or jungle locations. We love the Prehispanic Hot Stone Massage. The Spa Experience at Imanta and beach massage pavilion offer naturopathic treatments, using flowers and herbs that are prepared using pre-Hispanic techniques. Cool Touch: An Aztec-inspired temazcal, or sweat lodge, can be found in the jungle surrounding the resort.

Couples can also head over to the resort’s observatory for breakfast, drinks or dinner all with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding areas. The resort is home to two restaurants and a rooftop bar. For something a bit more intimate (as if that were possible), we suggest booking a private chef in one of the casona’s kitchens.

Wedding guests will love the amenities that the resort offers. Golfers will love the new Greg Norman Championship course. Note: We hear the resort has plans to open its own tennis courts in the near future. Hiking, guided tours, horseback rides and excursions to local Mexican villages are also available. For those who love water activities, there is fishing, surfing, windsurfing, rafting, as well as outings on yachts and sailboats.
