Peninsula Hotels Plans Property in Yangon, Myanmar

The Peninsula YangonMyanmar is riding high as one of the places to be in 2013, as highlighted by sister publication Travel Agent Magazine earlier this year: The lure of the final frontier has catapulted Myanmar to the top of many travelers’ bucket lists. Once isolated by a repressive military dictatorship, Myanmar is in the throes of tremendous change with recent government reforms and the election of democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi to Parliament after years of house arrest."

The latest proof of this tourism boom is the announcement by Peninsula Hotels of a luxury hotel project in Yangon. To be located inside the former Burma Railway Building on Bogyoke Aung San Road near Scott’s Market, The Peninsula Yangon will anchor a mixed-use development. In renovating the landmark building, close attention will be paid in preserving the colonial architecture. (Note the fine print of the press release: “The project is subject to binding agreements being signed and the fulfillment of a number of conditions.”)

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this development, so stay tuned for more details.
