Philippe Starck-Designed Basil’s Bar Reopens in Mustique

Part of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines islands, wow-worthy Mustique has long cast a spell on its visitors, an elite bunch of A-listers, including Princess Margaret. (This is a Caribbean playground for royals, and you can even rent out the sumptuous villa where Margaret vacationed every year for decades.) With white, sandy beaches and a lost-in-paradise vibe, this secluded private island continues to be a hot spot for jetsetters (and those daytripping from the nearby island of Bequia). After all, Mustique is where you can find one of the Caribbean’s best waterfront bars: Basil’s.

And in the latest news from the island, Basil’s Bar has reopened after a two-year renovation by Philippe Starck. The star designer is at the top of his game—with new projects like the buzzed-about Brach Hotel in Paris and everyday product design (furniture, electric bikes, individual wind turbine). The makeover of Basil’s Bar sought to pay homage to its heritage (a legendary island institution), while updating it in a chic, sophisticated and playful way. New features include the open kitchen and hide-away corners for private moments.

Overlooking the main harbor, Basil’s Bar has terrific views—not to mention the people watching. Enjoy live music while the sun sets, tucking into freshly grilled lobster washed down with a cocktail like the Hurricane David, mixed with white and dark rum, Kahlua, lime juice and sugar syrup. There’s also a cigar menu. Note that the blues festival in January is quite popular.
