Luxury Travel Advisor recently sat down with Glen Beache, CEO of the St. Vincent and The Grenadines Tourism Authority, and learned about two developments that are expected to give the destination a bit of momentum for 2014.

Beache told us the owners and investors of Sandy Lane hotel in Barbados are beginning to undergo the first phase of development for a resort in Canouan. Beache says it is still unknown whether the resort will be called Sandy Lane. This represents Sandy Lane's first expansion outside of Barbados. Beache says this multi-million dollar project will include roughly 30 rooms and an array of villas. No further details about the upcoming resort have been released.

Also, the highly anticipated Argyle International Airport will be ready by September of 2014, Beache says. The $240 million project is being financed by the St. Vincent government, as well as by grants and donations from a diverse group of countries.

The Argyle International Airport is being built on about 175 acres of land, with a paved runway 9,000 feet long and 150 feet wide. It is designed to accommodate jets as large as the Boeing 747-400s. The terminal building, with about 171,000 square feet of floor space, is designed to handle about 1.5 million passengers per year, more than five times the capacity of the current airport. The Argyle International Airport will replace the existing E.T. Joshua Airport and is expected to become an economic driver for this small country.

With vastly increased capacity, the new airport is expected to attract direct flights from major United States, Canadian, U.K. and other European destinations, and will spur increased investment in the country’s growing hospitality sector.
