Sunborn Gibraltar to Open as the World's First 5-Star Yacht Hotel

Sunborn Gibraltar

What to do when there’s a shortage of real estate in a sought-after destination? Open a floating hotel. The legendary Rock of Gibraltar in Spain is just such a location. And Sunborn, pioneers of the floating hotel concept, are planning to open “the world’s first five-star yacht hotel” there at the end of 2013. The Sunborn Gibraltar is a purpose-built, 465-foot yacht that will be permanently moored in the Ocean Village Marina.

The 167 guest rooms will have sea views framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, and 90% will have a balcony or terrace (pictured here). Facilities on the seven-storey yacht will include a spa, gym, cocktail lounges, fine dining restaurants, and abundant conference and event space.

Weather.com quotes CEO Brian Stevendale as describing the guest experience as different from a cruise ship because guests will feel like they’re staying on dry land. The Sunborn Gibraltar will be the first such project for the company, with additional floating hotels currently under development in London and Barcelona.
