Julian Smaldoni, general manager of the soon-to-open Thompson Playa del Carmen, recently visited Luxury Travel Advisor’s New York offices to fill us in on the details of the upcoming luxury hot spot.
The property’s first two floors will be designated entirely for shopping and nightlife, with 40 shops, including names like Michael Kors and Swarovski. We say the true highlight, however, may be a 30,000-square-foot rooftop deck and bar, where guests will enjoy an infinity pool, private cabanas with space for up to 20 people, underwater living rooms and multiple dining options.
Thompson Playa del Carmen, a 92-room boutique resort, starts accepting guests on November 20 on La Quinta Avenida and Calle 12, affording 360-degree ocean and city views. Also, situated nearby is the hotel’s more intimate property, the Beach House, which opens in early 2016.
“We want [the hotel] to blend in, and let our guests experience the destination as local,” Smaldoni said. “It is going to be the first hotel of its kind in the area, and will be the highest point in Playa del Carmen.”
All guest rooms will have queen-size beds or larger, with contemporary interior designs by Mexico City-based Niz+Chauvet, which fuses mid-century Mexican accents with natural wood, tile and stone.

An offshoot of New York City’s Meatpacking District restaurant, Catch, will head up the hotel’s gastronomy scene. Smaldoni reports that the resort is in the process of organizing partnerships with local fishermen to dock their boats in the nearby waters of the Caribbean, providing guests with fresh seafood caught the same day it reaches the table.
The nearby Beach House comprises only 27 rooms, of which 18 are suites. The more intimate setting is ideal for special events like weddings, anniversaries and family reunions.
Thompson Playa del Carmen is 35 miles from Cancun, and accessible through Cancun International Airport.
