In a written statement Claudio Zemp, director Americas for Switzerland Tourism, noted that the country has seen almost 10 percent growth in terms of U.S. visitors for the past three years running, and that the United States is Switzerland’s most important source market. “Regions which did exceptionally well are the Italian-speaking region Ticino in the south of Switzerland (up 19.2 percent) as well as the Lake Geneva region (up 22.7 percent),” Zemp said.

Two-thirds of all visitors from U.S. travel to Switzerland during the summer months. Switzerland Tourism’s campaign theme in 2020 is “I need Switzerland”, which emphasizes Switzerland’s versatility as a destination and ability to fulfill desires ranging from outdoor adventures to cultural activities in the city to epicurean experiences.

Tourism data is from the Swiss Federal Office of Statistics. Only overnights in Swiss hotels and youth hostels are counted; vacation homes, other kinds of accommodation and visits with friends and family are not included.
