A Renovation for andBeyond Bateleur Camp in the Maasai Mara

Planning a safari to Kenya’s legendary Maasai Mara to see the Great Migration? Keep this in mind: andBeyond Bateleur Camp will begin a renovation project on November 15. Expected to be complete by mid 2018, the refurbishment will be staggered over six months.

What’s in store at the famous tented camp? The guest tents will be rebuilt from scratch—enlarged to 1,044 square feet with both indoor and outdoor areas, designed to maximize the views. So you’ll be able to admire the wildlife from a daybed on your private verandah. New perks in the tents will include deep soaking tubs, al fresco showers, and butler hatches. Guests will also be able to ogle the stunning Maasai Mara panorama from the new fitness center. Other new additions include a massage sala, a new Safari Shop, a coffee bar that will morph into a gin bar in the evenings, plus two swimming pools with ample deck space for al fresco dining.

andBeyond Bateleur Camp is celebrated for its vintage safari atmosphere—reminiscent of the explorers of bygone times—and the refurbishment will preserve this vibe. The goal—according to the official press release—is to “enhance its sense of intimacy and luxury,” yet showcase the classic Kenyan safari (think shiny brass compasses, leather trunks and framed maps to recall explorers of old).

Here’s the timeline for the renovation: The North Camp will be closed when the project first kicks off in November, while six guest tents at South Camp stay open until January 7, 2018; then the entire camp will be closed from January 8 to February 28, 2018. North Camp is scheduled to reopen on March 1, 2018, and the entire refurbishment will be unveiled on June 1, 2018.
