Grand Isle Resort & Spa, a four-star luxury resort on the shores of Emerald Bay in Great Exuma, Bahamas, has partnered with Beneath the Waves and leading marine biologist Dr. Austin Gallagher to offer hotels guests the chance to participate in shark tagging and research. For a donation of $500, guests can reserve a spot during one of Dr. Gallagher’s excursions to search for, study and tag tiger, hammerhead, nurse and reef sharks.
The first round of excursions will take place February 19 – 26, with additional trips to be announced in the coming months.
“The Bahamas is one of the most important areas for sharks, globally, and conducting our shark tagging research in the Exumas will help us gather the necessary data to determine the value of protecting sharks for the environment and economy,” said Dr. Gallagher from Beneath the Waves.
Guests participating in the Shark Tagging Adventure will have the opportunity to:
- Assist with hands-on shark research with leading marine biologists (guests can be as hands-on as they would like, or they watch and learn)
- Help collect scientific data from sharks, which will help ongoing conservation projects (this includes taking measurements and tissue samples and tagging)
- Tag sharks with satellite tags that will allow biologists to monitor their movements in real time
- Learn why this research is so important
Bonus: Snacks and drinks will be included on board.
Space is limited on each excursion and reservations should be booked as soon as possible, the resort says. All donations will directly fund the NGO Beneath the Waves’ research efforts.
