Not far from the Place de la Madeleine in Paris, Hotel de Pourtalès was built in 1839 by architect Félix Duban as an aristocrat’s mansion, complete with a garden in the inner courtyard. The townhouse became an office building in the 20th century, before morphing into a VIP residence. This was the go-to address for privacy-seeking celebrities in Paris, a discreet townhouse that was also called the “No-Name Hotel.” (Not technically a hotel, the property housed luxury apartments, and guests included the likes of Prince, Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kim Kardashian.)
This month, the Hotel de Pourtalès has relaunched, promising a new hospitality experience, after a renovation that’s modernized the building and redesigned the interiors as a melange of contemporary and classical styles. The Pourtalès commissioned works by avant-garde French designers and famous international artists to decorate the 11 accommodations (nine suites and two guestrooms), which are spread over seven floors. Overseen by architect Agathe Labaye, the transformation project has taken place throughout 2019. Room tips: Each suite comes with its own bathroom, lounge, dining room, bedroom and fully-equipped kitchen. There are two enormous signature suites: The Garden Duplex and the Sky Penthouse, equipped with its very own rooftop terrace.
Starting in 2019, the Pourtalès is now under the management of Matthieu Houzai. In its new incarnation, the Pourtalès is stressing “security and exceptional service” as its twin hospitality pillars, providing a permanent concierge service, an in-house chef, and a dedicated bodyguard. The rooms can also be used for organizing private events.
