A new luxury boutique hotel is turning heads in Provence. It’s housed in a traditional Provençal mas (farmhouse) dating from the 18th century, just outside the popular tourist destination of Les Baux-de-Provence. Classified as one of “the most beautiful villages” in France, Les Baux sits on a rocky outcropping in the Alpilles mountains—with views from the hilltop chateau stretching as far as the eye can see.
The Mas de Chabran, as the new hotel is known, is the pet project of architect Alain Meylan and interior designer Liliana Atilova, who were charmed by the property’s historic features: Vast vaulted rooms with high ceilings, bathed in the distinctive Provençal sunlight, opening onto leafy French-style gardens. The top-to-bottom renovation has injected these majestic rooms with a contemporary vibe and a natural color palette; the designers were inspired by their love of horses and equestrian art in conceiving the decor. The idea? To create a hideaway that’s all about the “art de vivre à la française.”
Outfitted with large windows overlooking the gardens or the famous Les Baux chateau, the eight spacious rooms are spread out over three levels, decorated with Pierre Frey fabrics and bespoke luxury beds. The heated swimming pool is surrounded by century-old olive trees and the outside spaces are meant for strolling: Discover a vegetable garden, terraces with shaded pergolas, a large pond, fountain and a chapel. There’s also a spa with a massage room, sauna and yoga/fitness room.
Good to know: The Mas de Chabran is rented out in its entirety as a villa for week-long periods during high season; the capacity is 16 people. In low season, rooms can be booked individually.
