Mike Lewis On The Best Sushi Restaurants Outside Of Japan

Mike Lewis, The Daily Telegraph, June 26, 2013

Aqua Tokyo, Hong Kong

This place is quite expensive but worth it because it has a great view of the harbour, a very nice atmosphere and a huge range of dishes on the menu – the choice is just vast. As well as all of the sushi, my favourite dishes are the wagyu beef, scallops and abalone. aqua.com.hk

Dinings, London

I love the setting of this place – it’s in a little town house in Marylebone and they have squeezed about 30 seats in over two levels. They serve what you might call “tapas sushi”, little dishes with a real fusion of flavours. Try the tartare chips – deep-fried potato slices with different tartares inside. Very fun. dinings.co.uk

Miyako, Dubai

Everyone who works here is Japanese, from the waiters to the chefs, and the menu stays very true to traditional Japanese food so everything feels authentic. They focus on sushi and sashimi and the selection they offer is excellent. Everything is incredibly well made; I think it might be the best-quality sushi in Dubai. restaurants.dubai.hyatt.com/miyako

Roka, London

The design, the service, the atmosphere, the menu – this place just ticks every box for me. The sushi is incredible, especially its presentation, but other big features are the robata grill and fun shochu bar. It’s always my choice for special occasions. Try the tuna tartare with caviar. rokarestaurant.com

Tang’s, Edinburgh

I haven’t been to many sushi places in the rest of the UK that equal those in London, but this restaurant is one of them. It is the perfect place if you’re looking for value as it serves top-quality sushi at affordable prices and has some superb, great value set meals too. tangsgohan.com
