Mukul
Mukul has an intimate 37 rooms, each with ocean view, pool and private staff.

Nicaragua has received an extreme dose of luxury with the official opening of Mukul, one of the first luxury boutique hotels in the destination, and the buzz has not died down one bit.

The $250-million investment is spread on 1,670 acres in a private beach community on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast. Mukul (the Mayan word for ‘secret’) has an intimate 37 rooms, each with ocean view, pool and private staff. There are 12 one- and two-bedroom Beach Villas, which begin at 881 square feet, all with nine-foot ceilings and walls of glass. Beach Villas also have secret gardens with an outdoor shower. Best part? The 500-square-foot bathroom suites, which include his-and-hers vanity areas and a “Liquid Temple” wet room with a soaking tub and monsoon shower.

There are also 23 bohios (think tree houses in the jungle canopy), set 300 feet above Playa Manzanillo, with sweeping ocean views. Each hut is 621 square feet.

Top Touch: The Casona Don Carlos is a 20,000-square-foot oceanfront compound that has an indoor-outdoor living area with 89-foot-high palapa ceilings. The six-bedroom suites are divided into two buildings: Casona Don Carlos with four and Suite Doña Vivian with two. The suites have wrap-around stone terraces and share a large private pool.

We hear other amenities include Spa Mukul, which has six private spa casitas; a beach club with dining and lounge areas and a swimming pool; and an 18-hole Guacalito Golf Course. Nice Touch: There is also a four-mile stretch of beautiful beach to explore.

Dining options include the Mukul Beach Club, the Beach Terrace, Parrilla (perfect for barefoot dining), and La Mesa. There is also the Flor de Caña rum cellar, where guests can taste vintage rums and sample cigars. Unique Touch: The dining concept at Mukul is a bit different from that of other resorts. Included in the price of a room are a full breakfast and lunch, along with gourmet snacks around the pool and on the beach. Until 5 p.m., guests also enjoy complimentary beverages including soft drinks, domestic beers, wines, tequilas, rum and more.
