Four New Food Tours in Mexico City

Foodies looking to sample Mexico City’s famous food scene will have four new options to choose from, courtesy of Eat Like a Local Mexico City. The company has launched four new itineraries exploring vegan cuisine, mezcal and pulque, and more.

Vegan Market & Roma Norte Adventure: Developed as a collaboration between Eat Like a Local founder Rocio Vazquez Landeta and vegan chef Astrid Ceballos, who manages Palacio de Hierro’s healthy food offerings, this tour explores local Mexican vegan dishes and a mix of vegan restaurants in Roma Norte. Highlights include a visit to the largest wholesale flower market in the city, where guests can enjoy grilled corn, squash blossom cheese-free quesadillas and a fruit tasting spanning more than 12 local varieties. The tour also visits non-vegan restaurants with outstanding vegan dishes, including one owned by Enrique Olvera, the owner and head chef at Pujol. The itinerary is available from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with Ceballos leading on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and Landeta on the other days.

Roma Norte at Night: Mezcal & Pulque: In another exploration of the trendy Roma Norte neighborhood, on this tour travelers can sample street food favorites, such as corn covered in mayo, lime, cheese and chili powder; tortas from a hidden stall that serves a famous soup called birria; and, for the adventurous, suadero: brisket cooked in lard for several hours and sprinkled with cilantro and onion. The group also visits a stall that has served tacos for more than 60 years, which Eat Like a Local says is one of their favorites, an Argentinian-Mexican fusion taco place and a spot serving street quesadillas. The food tour ends with a warm churro, after which the group heads to a traditional pulque place. Here, travelers have the chance to learn about pulque—a fermented drink made with agave juice and often mixed with fruits, caramel or even cookies—as well as try three different flavors. After that, the tour ends at a trendy mezcal and wine shop where guests can try four different kinds of mezcal, Mexican wine or craft beer. The tour runs from Tuesday to Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Food Tour With Kids: This family-friendly option starts in the Condesa neighborhood with coffee for the parents and hot chocolate for the kids before heading to the flower market where kids can taste tacos, cheese quesadillas, candy, corn, ice cream and jicaletas, a Mexican treat made with jicama sprinkled with flavored sugar. Parents will have the chance to relax while the guides take care of the kids, teaching them how to ride the subway in style and cool facts about Mexican history, as well as giving them the chance to play with corn dough. The tour ends in Condesa with gummy bears and lime popsicles and a stop at a cool playground while parents can have a cocktail at a nearby bar, and the kids will be able to take home a tiny piñata, candy and a commemorative pin marking them as members of the Brave and Adventurous Kids Travelers Club.

Food Tour for Bachelors and Bachelorettes: Created specifically for groups the day after bachelor and bachelorette parties, this tour begins with restorative coffee and coconut water at 11:30 a.m. before heading off to visit several street food stalls. After a subway trip to the flower market, where the group will have the chance to enjoy beer, carnitas, candy, fruit and other Mexican delicacies, guests will participate in a pulque tasting at a 100-year-old pulquería. Finally, the group will walk around Roma Norte and experience an alcohol-based ice-cream shop tasting mezcal and passion fruit or margarita sorbet and other great mezcals, Mexican wine or craft beer. This tour is available upon request.
