Update: According to the BBC, Kensington Palace has announced that the Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy, who was delivered at 4:24 p.m. BST at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington. The Prince, whose name has not yet been announced, reportedly weighs 8lb 6oz.
The palace said in a statement that the duchess and the baby were "doing well" and would stay in the hospital overnight.
It's finally happening: Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, is in St. Mary's Hospital in the London neighborhood of Paddington to have the next heir to the throne. According to the BBC, she will give birth in the hospital's private Lindo Wing, where both her husband, Prince William, and her brother-in-law Prince Harry were born.
The site also notes growing crowds and a "strong police presence" around the hospital, which is very close to Paddington Station (anyone doing sightseeing in the area may want to visit other attractions today), and that today is "the hottest day of the year" so far. (We say it seems like a good day to go relax in one of the city's parks: They will be cooler and much less crowded.)
While royal births have traditionally been announced by a sign attached to the railings of Buckingham Palace, this birth will be announced on an easel in the forecourt of the palace. Once the announcement is displayed, media--both social and traditional--will also be informed of the news.
