Azura Retreats to Open Tanzania Lodge in June

More African hotel companies are looking to expand: Azura Retreats, which owns and manages luxury boutique hotels in Mozambique, will expand into Tanzania as of June 1.

We hear that three new projects are in the works, the first of which will be the Azura Selous Game Reserve. Azura is taking over and refurbishing an existing property, Amara Selous, on the banks of the Ruaha River. The 12 tented suites, each of which has a private pool and river views, are set to be upgraded. The rooms have indoor stone bathrooms, spacious chandeliered dressing areas, outside showers and large terraces with plunge pools. Stone floors and air conditioning help keep the tents cool during the hotter months.

The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa, a 30-minute  flight from Dar es Salaam, and is has lions, elephants and wild dogs. Game drives here are private affairs, and it's rare for any one group to see any other during a trek. Walking safaris will be a particular highlight for adult guests, and as the only camp in the Selous to accept children under 12, a special kids program will help educate them on the bush, teach tracking skills and river-fishing.

The large decked area and infinity pool at the heart of the lodge overlooks the rapids of the Great Ruaha River and resident hippos.  The nearby open-sided dining and lounging area will also be given an Azura styled make-over creating a social and welcoming environment for guests. Cool touch: Dining locations will vary daily, and honeymooners will get some special perks.

Looking ahead, Azura will have another safari product in the pipeline for Zimbabwe, and two further island based beach hotels also planned for Tanzania.

Azura Selous will open on June 1. Email [email protected] for booking.
