AmaWaterways and Backroads Double River Cruise Offerings in 2017

AmaWaterways and Backroads have announced an expanded 2017 lineup of active river cruise departures. The two companies will offer more than 100 active sailings in 2017, developing the partnership between the active adventure brand and the river cruise company.

“Our work with Backroads has been a resounding success so far, enhancing the experience of our guests, while attracting a new category of travelers to the rapidly expanding river cruise market,” said Kristin Karst, executive vice president and co-owner of AmaWaterways.

The two combined services offer biking, walking and hiking cruises for solo travelers, couples and families. In 2016, AmaWaterways and Backroads debuted river cruise biking trips on the Rhine, Seine and Portugal’s Douro rivers. In addition to cycling trips, Backroads will launch an all-new walking tour in the Douro in 2017. During this trip, cruises will explore the gorges and vineyards of northern Portugal and Western Spain and also venture to the Douro River Valley, Madrid, Porto and Lisbon.

Every trip includes the traditional elements from Backroads, including the trip leaders, custom titanium or electric bikes, support vans, and cycling, hiking and walking itineraries for all abilities. While onboard, guests will stay in a signature twin-balcony stateroom with French and outside balconies. There will also be a heated pool with a swim-up bar.
