Ponant & The Explorers Club Unveil 30-day Antarctica Expedition

Ponant and The Explorers Club have announced 12 expeditions across five continents from 2024 to 2026. The inaugural expedition, the 30-day “Unexplored Antarctica between Two Continents” itinerary from January 7–February 5, 2024 will analyze the effects of climate change on the glaciers.

Ponant is the only small ship expedition line to partner with The Explorers Club. The itinerary will combine The Explorers Club’s research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences with the technological advancements of Ponant’s newest vessel, Le Commandant Charcot, the luxury icebreaker which also serves as a floating research center with an onboard laboratory.

The all-new half-circumnavigation will sail from the tip of South America to New Zealand, crossing the mythic line of the Antarctic Polar Circle, sailing three southern seas, and tracing the paths of legendary explorers such as Jean-Baptiste Charcot and Roald Amundsen. Highlights include approaching remote islands such as Marie Byrd Land; exploring the world’s largest marine protected area home to whales, orcas, seals and penguins; glimpsing the highest volcano in Antarctica and the 43-mile Drygalski Ice Tongue; and enjoying offshore outings such as Zodiac adventures, kayaking, hiking and snowshoeing.

Led by glaciologist and geologist Dr. Ulyana Horodyskyj Peña, guests can engage in discussions and hands-on snow sampling workshops to learn more about climate change and steps that can be implemented to slow the process down. Ponant, The Explorers Club and Dr. Peña share a unified ethos centered on the idea that exploration can lead travelers and scientists alike to better understand, learn, share, and protect the planet and its ecosystems.

“Both Ponant and The Explorers Club are founded on principles of exploration with a deep respect for scientific research whose studies aim at preserving our oceans, the environment and climate,” said Navin Sawhney, CEO of Americas, Ponant. “The Explorers Club’s members have been responsible for a series of famous ‘firsts,’ including first to the South Pole, so it felt fitting for Antarctica to be the inaugural expedition onboard our polar exploration vessel, Le Commandant Charcot.”

Rates start at $50,550 per person, based on double occupancy, for the 30-day “Unexplored Antarctica between Two Continents” itinerary.
