Amanresorts is on a roll- with new hotel openings in Brazil and Venice, and rumors flying about projects in Vietnam, Jordan, and China. The latest we’ve heard is about a swanky new resort slated for Portugal’s Alentejo coast south of Lisbon. According to Reuters, “Portugal's efforts to upgrade its tourism industry got a boost… with the announcement of plans for a $121 million luxury resort whose backers say is the biggest tourism investment in a decade.”
An Aman resort and spa will be the cornerstone of the Herdade da Comporta resort which will also encompass an 18-hole golf course and 51 luxury vacation homes. In an interview with Reuters, Tourism Secretary Adolfo Mesquita Nunes said Portugal must ramp up its promotional effots to fend off competition from countries like Croatia and Turkey. "We are a strong player in the sun and sea market, but we have work to do to get a more diverse image of Portugal as a tourist destination," he said.
