Denzel Washington to Return to Broadway Next Year

Exciting news for theater fans in New York today: According to the Associated Press, Oscar- and Tony-winner Denzel Washington will return to Broadway in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry’s masterpiece A Raisin in the Sun. The production is scheduled to begin previews in March.

Playbill.com notes that fellow Tony-winner Anika Noni Rose (Caroline, Or Change) and Oscar-nominee Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda) are rumored to co-star in the project, and Tony-nominee Kenny Leon (Stick Fly, The Mountaintop, Fences) seems likely to direct.

Washington was last on Broadway in a revival of August Wilson's Fences, and earned a Tony award for his work. A Raisin in the Sun was last revived on Broadway nearly 10 years ago with Sean Combs, Audra McDonald and Phylicia Rashād in the leading roles. Leon also directed that production, and Rashad and McDonald both earned Tony Awards.

No theater or confirmed opening date has been announced for this revival yet, and while tickets are not yet available, they will most likely be sold through telecharge.com
