Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, debuts this December as the second Ritz-Carlton Reserve, joining Phulay Bay in Krabi, southern Thailand, in the growing Reserve portfolio. The resort is accepting reservations starting from August 1.

Built on the former 1950s Laurance Rockefeller estate, the new resort sits on three miles of Caribbean coastline and is surrounded by tropical forests and coral reefs. Formerly a plantation, Rockefeller transformed Dorado Beach to serve as an environmentally friendly luxury getaway. The new Ritz-Carlton resort remains focused on both sustainability and luxurious amenities. With only 115 guest rooms spread across 50 acres, privacy is a major perk, and every suite is right on the beach.
Su Casa is a four-bedroom villa that’s been restored to emulate its original 1920s style, with the addition of a few modern hints. Sliding wall panels are a nice touch, allowing for an open-air experience. We hear noteworthy names such as Ava Gardner, Joan Crawford and U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower spent some quality time in this plush pad during their prime.

Resort amenities include an 18-hole golf course, and the Beach Club with separate adult and family pools. Guests can also go snorkeling in onsite coral reefs or hit the spa, which has glass-walled pavilions and tree-house treatment platforms, outdoor showers and soaking tubs.
Nice Touch: The resort has teamed up again with Jean-Michel Cousteau to create an environmental education and eco-adventure program, reminiscent of what’s been done at Ritz-Carlton’s Grand Cayman and Laguna Niguel resorts. The Ambassadors of the Environment program will allow travelers to explore coral reefs, wetlands and traditional Taino culture, and will also provide activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, hiking and exploring an archaeological site located on the property. The original Rockefeller Trail will also be part of the program.
Alejandro Helbling is general manager for the resort; he was most recently with the Bulgari Bali. Luxury travel advisors can contact director of sales and marketing, Isabel Gracia ([email protected]) for VIP bookings.
