Soneva Fushi has re-introduced a freediving course for the peak season, from October this year until the end of April 2014.
While the technical content of the course is professionally presented, the whole process is meant to be entertaining and fun for the participants. This is an opportunity to discover the joy of bonding with the ocean, since freediving teaches improving one’s swimming and finning technique, breath length capacity, ability to relax and focus, equalization, and to be comfortable in the water – also known as “Aquaticity”.
Participants will learn the theory, physiology and physics in freediving for them to be more confident in the water. Health, diet and fitness benefits will also be discussed.
Ken Kiriyama is Soneva Fushi’s new freediving expert. The Japanese-Danish is the founder of KYMA – Kiriyama Yoga & Meditation Academy. Through his teenage years, he was a martial artist, a dancer, runner and amateur road bicycle racer. He has practiced the three main paths of Yoga followed nowadays and has traveled the world extensively to study and practice, especially India, and he did his Iyengar Yoga teacher trainings in Australia. Kiriyama is a freediving athlete and also an instructor in Apnea Academy. His teaching approach is based on relaxation, breathing and awareness. He won a bronze medal in the No Fins category in Hellas Freediving Competition in 2010, and a silver medal in the Danish Depth Championships in 2011.
“To freedive is one of the most amazing activities you can do. The feeling after a good dive is similar to the effects of meditation; you feel relaxed, peaceful and happy,” Kiriyama said.
The group course is charged at $120 per hour. For those who want the full attention of the Soneva instructor, private sessions are available for $250 per hour.
