New Details on Renovation of Tavern on the Green

Those who miss New York City's iconic Tavern on the Green in Central Park can take heart: The New York Post is reporting that the city's Public Design Commission has released some details of the classic eatery's $10 million makeover.

The new design, expected to be completed by the summer of 2013, would reportedly bring the enormous city-owned catering hall back to its 19th-century origins. (The picture at right is from 1899, offering an idea of what we may expect…classic, we say!) Also planned is the reconstruction of landmark-quality brick and cut stone for exterior walls, a new paved service yard, the installation of historically appropriate windows, new hot-water heaters, and a fire alarm system. Demolition work has already begun.

The renovation leaves 10,320 square feet of indoor dining space and an 11,950-square-foot outdoor terrace.
