New in the French Alps: Altapura, a Luxury Ski Resort in Val Thorens

Come December, ski bunnies will have new luxury digs in France's Val Thorens, the highest ski resort in Europe and part of the world's largest ski domain. This is the latest concept resort by Sibuet Hotels & Spa, the hoteliers behind Les Fermes de Marie in Megève. (To read our firsthand account of this winter paradise, check out our article in the May 2011 issue.)

Altapura will have ski-in/ski-out access to the uncrowded, perfectly groomed slopes of this world-famous ski area. All surrounded by some of the most breathtaking mountains in the world (like Mont Blanc!) Capped by solar panels, the hotel has been designed with local wood and stone in a Nordic style. Altapura has 88 contemporary guest rooms with wood-lined walls, bathrooms decked out in natural mineral stone, and all the latest technology. The furniture was custom designed by Nicolas and Jean-Louis Sibuet. There will be three concept restaurants, and an on-site ski shop. Resort services includes a dedicated kids concierge.

We're terribly excited about the Pure Altitude Spa. The original spa at Les Fermes de Marie showcases the signature “Pure Altitude” line of products, which incorporates alpine mountain plants like edelweiss. Decorated in birch, the 1,000-square-meter spa will have seven treatment rooms and an indoor/outdoor pool. The wet spa circuit (including a sauna, ice fountains, and an igloo with snow!) channels pure Scandinavia.
